For the last
four years the St. Petersburg School of Religion and Philosophy (SRPh) has
considered developing certain steps in the field of science and faith interface
in St.Petersburg, Russia, and discovering possibilities of supporting such
developments.
After the
promising start of the conference Science and Faith: The Problem of
the Human Being in Science and Theology, in St. Petersburg in
2000 (
Research Projects,
Translation and Publication),
it became clear that the purpose of further interface development should be an
attempt to establish a group of scholars to explore ways in which the dialogue
can be developed in Russia/CIS. And we were glad that we were able to bring
together those people, who are working towards the same aims in different
places, cities and countries. This group is now working in the frame of
St.Petersburg Educational Center for Religion and Science
(SPECRS)” launched by SRPh and affiliated to SRPh
and supported by Local Societies Initiative (LSI) of
METANEXUS Institute on Religion and Science
http://www.metanexus.net.
During the
years of 2002-2003 the series of seminars at SPECRS were supported by the
European branch (Germany) of the Center for Theology and Natural Sciences (CTNS,
USA).
To-day, after the work done in 2000-2008 within preparatory activities of the Templeton conferences in St.Petersburg and in Moscow in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005 the number of publications in Russian in English of 2001, series of SPECRS seminars of 2002-2006, GPSS investigations of 2005-2006, we can say that SPECRS is a perspective tool to promote and to develop science and religion dialogue among individuals, scientists and
scholars. This process of organizational work of SPECRS went in cooperation and
consultations with the St.Petersburg Association of Scientists and Scholars,
St.Petersburg Scientific Center of Russian Academy of Sciences, St.Petersburg
Theological Academy and Seminary, Committee on Science and Higher Education of
the St.Petersburg Administration, academic and theological institutions in the
cities of Russian Federation/CIS, and the interested groups in Estonia, Poland,
Slovenia, Hungary, Germany, Holland, England and USA ( see some names at
List of SPECRS Participants) .
